Don't think so. The birds act absolutely differently when warning me. They actually look me in the eye by cocking their heads toward me. Never happens otherwise. Have had a crow fly directly toward my windshield and spread his wings to stop at the last moment. hovering in mid-air and then moving off. The spread wings is the highest form of warning, I found out later. The warning was to turn around, as I was thinking of doing, as it was starting to snow. I decided to go on, and the snow suddenly got heavier, with ice mixed in. I ended up in a ditch, and had to spend the next three hours trying to get out. These birds DO KNOW what they are doing. They are aware. They are aware of the future. Awareness is the common link that we have with them. I do not think that this subject could be over analysed in any way, for we know very little about it.

thresholdofadream - I think you're over-analyzing. The Divine or Spirit has a way to get spiritual messages to us through various means, and if using a bird's flight pattern or behaviors will do the trick, then the Divine will use that as a way to get your attention. Messages don't only come through birds, and I don't necessarily think the birds even realize that they're bringing you a message, it's just that their presence happens to be what you need at that point in time to come about that message. Hopefully this makes sense.

I would like to go a bit deeper into this. Where do the birds get the information? Are they pre-programmed to follow certain people, or just people in general. How do they know what is about to happen? This supports my theory that the future is set at the moment of your birth, and somehow the crows can see it coming. I always have the most unusual feeling when the crows are warning me, it's as if I have slipped into a space between dimensions, time seems to slow down and sounds are lowered in volume for a few seconds. Anyone else have this also?

Well, here's another one. As I was meeting my daughter in Greensboro, N. C. in the Whole Foods parking lot, I saw the unmistakable signs of crows flying in patterns across my path. This happened as I was driving there, and again as I walked through the parking lot. They are insistent at getting my attention when they are trying to tell me something, and it is usually a warning that I am about to do something that I will regret. I could not come up with the answer, as multiple choices were possible. Could it be something in the store, or on my way home in traffic? Well, they were right. I needed some L-glutamine, and they only had the Jarrow brand in pure powder. I usually use GNC brand. I bought the Jarrow because it was on sale. This was on Sunday. Took two doses on Monday, and felt very sick, headache with dizzyness. Realized what it was, as I always pay attention to a brand change. This stuff is not even glutamine. Does not taste like it, or act like it. I even think it is some kind of pharmaceutical, as Jarrow, since it's sale to a large company, has gone to China for all their supplement manufacture. So the CROWS WERE RIGHT!

Such an interesting page. I saw a male red headed finch first time this morning. The property I live on has a bald eagle and a golden eagle that circle regularly as well as hawks and falcons. I love watching the birds and really feel that if I meditate when I see them that the purpose of the visitation always becomes clear. Moreover it ALWAYS seems to tie in to something in my life and is a significant message if some sort every time. Read your entire page today. Interesante. I will be back for sure.

Here's one for you. On July 3rd a small bird flew into my house in VT and was banging itself against the living room window. It became dazzed and I pick it up with my bare hands took him outside and he flew into the Maple tree in front of the window. How he got through the screened porch is anyone's guess.
Today July 4th I am standing in front of my workbench in the barn and an empty birdsnet falls right on top of the paper work in front of me.

Gracias. I know I have felt a great deal of peace since we laid mom's ashes to rest in a very beautiful cemetery full of trees, sunshine and flowers. Mom baffled us at times with how she felt things or knew things before anyone of us. She did have an energy and I am glad she is free.

Heather - I don't know for sure but this is just a theory from my end. The birds might have known her energy, her spirit. and were mourning her passing so much that they gave up their own lives to be with her soul. I know it sounds whacky but that's the feeling I got from this. I don't think it was a bad omen, I think it was their way of showing gratitude and reverence.

She was raised on a farm. She had a green thumb and could bring plants back to life. As long as she lived in a house, she always had a garden. She loved animals, especially the dogs we had. Over the last years of her life she loved visits from my little chihuahua who was growing old too and she use to tell me to pick up Cokee differently because she said dogs are like humans when they get old their bones hurt too.

Heather - I'm sure your Mother is in a happy place. I don't think the birds have anything to do with your mother. But it's possible. In my humble opinion, birds flying into windows and glass and such and then dying is usually a negative sign. But it just depends on how you feel about it. Question though - was your mother very in tune with nature? Did she do a lot of gardening or farming? Was she connected closely with animals?

After my burial of my mother's ashes, three small birds flew into the glass railing at my sister's lake house where the entire family gathered for a wake. We carried the birds off in the hopes that they were just knocked out, but they died. We went for a boat ride and when we returned, there was a fourth bird that flew into the glass railing and it was dead. Don't know what to make of it. Mom was spiritual and could feel things before they happened. Mom had four children. Is there any meaning here with birds. Mom was always a gentle person and loved animals and I cannot see her trying to give us a message that would cause an animal to die.
I got a really creepy feeling and then when I was walking round a corner a baby dead bird (it was black, not sure what type) was at the side of the pavement I was walking up :( poor bird

Happens to me all the time. Don't feel alone in this. The more you pay attention, the more you will begin to see patterns in this. Birds flying close to me have always been a omen of change. Sometimes the crows tell me which direction it is coming from, but not, of course, what it is specifically.

ako75 - To me it sounds like you are VERY in touch with nature. many times these beings are drawn to us. I have been through similar experiences as you yourself are experiencing now. As for the dying birds, the finch means happiness and opportunity, the hummingbird means a coming home to the old ways. these birds passing away is significant. unfortunately I do not have an answer as to why they are passing away close to you. but they do have a very powerful message for you. Hello Ms. Kitty. I would really appreciate your insight. For the past year I have been doing spiritual work and during that time I have had a number of "strange" animal happenings. They almost always come in groupings, below is a list
the hummingbirds - 20 to 30 visits
the coyote - a visit at work, in the parking garage
the blue herons - 2 flew over my car, clearance of maybe 3 feet
the crows - ever present, they caw softly when I come outside, when I am inside they follow my from room to room and watch through the window. I feed them now (from time to time) and they know my car/are usually waiting for me when I get home from work
the dear - two doe and a fawn crossing the street
the owl - flew over my head, clearance of about 6ft
a few more hummingbirds - one in particular that hovered at eye level for about 30 seconds a few feet from me before, sort of checking me out
continued visits from my crow pals
the hummingbird - dropped out of the sky in front of me (deceased)
the finch - dropped out of the sky in front of me wounded (at work), passed away before I could get them help
To give a little context, my work and home are in highly populated areas, I live in the suburbs. I try not to mention these events to anyone as they seem so out of the ordinary. Each event has occurred while I am alone.
The owl, dead hummingbird and dead finch have all occurred in the past 5 to 7 days. I buried the two that passed and said a prayer to Great Spirit honoring them & always thanking for the sign/gift.

Before reading this if someone had told me that birds bring us messages I would have told them they were bonkers. You have just given me answers to a daily encounter with a Barn Owl. Toward the end of 2012 and at the start of 2013 I noticed an Owl always seemed to be waiting for me at about 11 o clock everyday around the same place. After seeing me he would always fly with me for half a mile then fly off into the distance. It was at the time my Mother in law was ill in hospital. She came home but after 17 days, sadly she died. I haven't seen the Owl or any other Owl since. I am of the opinion now it was sent to make me aware of her impending death. If only I could've foreseen it.

Well, I agree totally with kitty. I have long heard that our pets carry our burdens, whether health or psychological, helping us, and most of us are unaware this is happening. I had two dachshunds whom we loved, but never thought special because we were very young newly marrieds and had many dach puppies in the past. As with most of my generation, we pleased ourselves before taking care of the dachs. They both died of illnesses which could have been prevented, had I taken more notice. It is now 40 years later. A miracle has occurred! Both dachs have reincarnated, in the exact size, traits, habits, bark sounds, facial shapes. photos of the old ones held next to the new ones are identical. The Lord gave us a second chance, and believe me, we have spoiled them terribly. Sleep in the bed with us! Now need puppies to keep it going.

Robin symbolizes rebirth and great sacrifice. The robin is a divine bird, and "Robin people" often have past life ties to Jesus Christ. Robins are good parents like many birds are. One facet of this power animal their ability to nurture themselves into true adulthood. This is signified by the robin's red breast - it symbolizes the activation of creative energy, inciting growth. This is also linked with the Robin's traditional connection to spring - the season of renewal. When we let go of our past - a lot of which stems from childhood experiences - we are refreshed and renewed, thus unburdened and free to nurture and serve ourselves as well as others. If the robins gifts have not been learned and utilised correctly, you will be continually challenged by the prospects of change with difficulties cropping up as well as emotional disharmony. Let go of the past…move on.

Good Morning, Ms. Kitty. I have returned to this hub in the hope of finding some answers. I couldn't quite see what I was looking for although I did find the sections about crows and ravens useful.
I've been trying to photograph a red-breasted robin that perches on my fence first thing in the morning. He always flies off just as I am about to click the shutter.
While walking through the local country park yesterday, I saw some more robins flitting through the trees. I managed to get some shots but they were so rushed I'm not sure they will be any good.
After leaving the park, we decided to pick up some groceries from the cash and carry. It's basically a warehouse and while picking up my items, I kept hearing a bird chirping so I went in search of it. Perched on top a high shelf was a robin.
I am now wondering why I've seen so many robins in one day when normally I may see one or two a week. I've read that they are a symbol of change and rebirth. I'm wondering if you could give my your opinion. I'd be very grateful.

To answer Sammie. I try to look at bird signs the same way I look at astrology. They both seem to warn of conditions being in place for something to happen. Each time I have a bird sign, I try to remember it for the next week, and be in a more than average alert state. This way I usually can avoid a bad situation, or, if it actually happens, am more prepared for it. You said these were "black birds". Were they actually crows? I would like to add how it feels, mentally and physically. Taking a retrograde for example, this of course is when a planet seems to go backwards in relation to our orbit. Today, sitting in my car, waiting for my son to get out of school, I saw a bald eagle in the distance, I could tell right away because of the size of the bird. I always have my DSLR with me, but because it's been so cold in NH, (-4 at night) I have been leaving it in the house :(
I watched the eagle soar over the tops of the trees, then he turn and flew directly over the my car, I just watched in amazement. I was bummed I didn't have my camera, but extremely happy I had witnessed its beauty.
We have bald eagles around here, but I have never seen one that close. As it flew overhead, I was wondering what it meant, what was the message?

So interesting about the birds. I couldn't hear the owl video well, but it seems you said you thought they left. Where do the owls go - migrate to where?
I didn't know owls were evil, I thought, too, they meant wisdom. I had heard black birds are a bad omen. But all these lovely, feathery creatures, it is hard to see.

Just a bit of info about divining rod detection, as the astrological will take more time than I have at the present moment. Rods can be of almost any bendable metal. I have two that originally were used in welding. About a foot and a half long, with additional six inches bent 90 degrees for a hand hold. To divert bad energy from your house, go to each corner of the yard. Holding the rods loosely in each hand pointing outwards, walk back and forth over the area. When either a good energy line or metal pipe is walked over, the rods will cross each other, turning inward. Hard to believe, but it worked the first time for me. When a bad energy line is crossed, the rods will diverge, turning outward, sometimes both, sometimes only one. Try to locate the exact spot. Then drive an iron rod into the ground, flush with it. Old rebar from construction sites works well. This seems to channel the energy up and over the house, if each corner is treated likewise. There are many anecdotal stories of people's luck changing drastically after this was done.

I have lots of info of this kind, various subjects, all pertaining to unusual or 'non-normal' practices as viewed by the average public, such as divining rod detection of lay lines, deflection of harmful power sources, astrological prediction of probabilities ( very useful! ) and much more. threshold - This is called augury, when you look at bird's flights patterns and interpret them accordingly. It's an ancient celtic practice.

I really believe it depends on what kind of bird it is. Crows, especially, carry a type of knowledge that they want to impart to you. This has been proven true to me over the course of the last 30 years. A large flight of crows flying over you usually means major change is headed your way, and if you notice the direction they are headed, the change will come from this way. One single crow flying low towards you, and either spreading his wings as if to land, to attract your attention, or giving one or two loud caws as he passes over, means that, very quickly, sometimes within the next hour, you will experience something that at the time you find unpleasant. With me it usually is an argument with someone or car trouble. It probably will be different with others. If you start to notice this, and watch it for a while, you will notice the "cause and effect" phenomenon. I am a Christian, and have no attachment to the dark side, but still this happens consistently!

If you read Carlos Castaneda, the first two books, I think I remember that the info on crows is in there. I know he became very lazy and drugged after he made all that money on the books, but don't discount what he learned in the first five or six books. I think he discovered something amazing that he wasted later because it was so hard to do. Please check this out, as most of the info here I have tried and it works!

i have a story that is very true about "the bird in the house" i was always told growing up that if a bird flies in the house there was gonna be a death in the family. In 2010 me and my boyfriend were staying in his families cabin we did every friday night and sometimes saturday nights i loved that cabin the moment i laid eyes on it always looked forward to my weekends i always slept so good there well it was routine always to go there. One sunday morning after being there both friday and saturday night we were going to go up to my boyfriends families house and eat sunday dinner just like every other weekend and my boyfrien was loading up our trash and cleanin the place back up i was making the bed and 2 birds don't really remember what kind they were small maybe a scrub jay or blue jay but they both at the same time came in like right toghether i jumped under the blankets and i knew at that exact time something wasn't right i remebered all the stories in my life about " the bird in the house and death" never in a million years would i have ever imagined i even said it to my boyfriend as he was shooing them out and getting them out of the cabin about 3 weeks went by my boyfriend and his brother were called out to work the both worked at the same place and were close as brothers could be on that night in december at about 10 pm my boyfriend called frantic saying he had ran over his brother 7 days later his brother died of the injuries the birds came right to my head but i never said it out loud but i knew and i kept thinking who was the other one 5 days later i get a call from a buddy of my dad and he said you need to get down here your dads girlfriend was found dead this morning at her home i was shocked already but was trying to stay strong for the man i loved while he and his family were coping now my dad needed me and i just was thinking she was the other bird in my mind never out loud needless to say i believe it i seen it i felt it. it was very hard to put this into words i just felt i needed to my boyfriend lives with horrible horrible ACCIDENT everyday my dad blames himself for the girlfriend and there's me tryin to help but always remebering those 2 birds in the house

I had always thought owls represented wisdom. I had a dream of a big owl over a month ago and I was happy about it. But then my elderly neighbor told me she had learned, through her readings of American Indian culture, that it meant something else. However, she refused to say what. Now I know why! DIOS MIO. I'm sticking with my wisdom thing.

Very interesting. I have always believed that birds are angels. While we humans believe that we are the most important creatures on earth, i believe that the birds that fly above us and nest around us are in fact the rulers of this planet. We have talked about angels for thousands of years, about creatures that watch above us, are we so ignorant not to see what is in front of our very eyes?

I was drawn to your hub by it's title. What immediately came to mind was both my mom and grandmother always said if a black bird flew into your house, it was a harbinger of death, and at the very least bad luck. I do recall going to several funerals as a child, but it was so long ago I couldn't say if those events were preceded by a black bird.

Hi Kitty. OwlВґs are cosidered to be lucky in Spain so IВґm fortunate to have had a pair nesting somewhere very near to my house for the last 2 years. When I first heard the babyВґs making noise, I and my guests at the time and my neighbours couldВґnt work out what the noise was, but then we saw them in the trees, not very clearly as it was dark, but you could see the outline of 3 sitting together, and then we heard the unmistakable call of the parents. They brough up another family this year, and also I had birds nesting in a box and an ornametal pot on one of the house walls. I love having all this birdlife round me, to me its an honour that they should feel safe enough to be so close.
Iwas just in appleton tenn and there are tree famlies still living there, the town still stands as my mother grew up there. while there an owl flew very low over myself and three sisters and that very night i seen three strange balls of blue light dancing around in the trees i took a picture of one i seen at the graveyard. I don't know what thay are but remember hearing my mother and grandmother talk about them. anyone know if the owl was warning me of something.

If I remember right, the Raven is larger, has a slightly more curved beak and usually has a more pronounced "ruff" around it's neck. All things describable best if there happens to be one of each present, of course.
I've had many experiences with owls. Although some have pertained directly to the death of someone close, I tend to see them more as messengers of change, or transition, as death can also relate to the release of an old thought form or belief.
There was one night, back in SoCal.,after doing some significant meditative energy work regarding humanity in general, some friends and I visited several parks around the city. Great Horned owls kept showing up everywhere we went. What was very strange is they traveled in a flock, which I'd never heard of before and have never witnessed since.

This is so interesting! We have had a robin in our neighborhood that has been flying into our windows and our neighbor's windows in the house across the street from ours. Her grandmother and my mother both loved robins and we both discussed the possibility that these were messages to us from our loved ones.

daughter of maat - Funny that you mention the hawk being a guardian, in Bobby Lake Thom's book "Spirits of the Earth" he specifically says that eagles & hawks can be guardians. It seems as though your hawk-friend is watching out for your dogs' graves and your family too. ) I like ravens too. but I can never tell them apart from crows, except for I think they're larger usually.

prakriti - you may very well be able to do that. The Native Americans believed that birds were messengers of god and ancestors. Tell the bird what you want to tell your loved one.
moonlake - Yes, I've heard that that has happened to others as well. but again, you have to go off your experiences in order to interpret bird omens & signs. ) Thanks!
klara - Yes, I have an owl friend too (pictured in the video above). and he is a friend, but he also warns of death usually. I don't consider it bad, I consider it to be a good thing that he is trying to tell me beforehand.

I find owls bring awareness of things people may not be ready for. Since people are not ready for it, they may consider whatever the message is to be ill, or an omen. Owls make us acknowledge the things that we have not seen with our conscious eyes. They bring things into realization weather we are ready for it or not. Change is constant weather we want it or not. The owl brings awareness of change.

I have a red tailed hawk that visits us occasionally. He sits in our Catalpa tree which is the tree my dogs are buried under. I'm not sure what that really means, but it feels like he's a guardian.
Great hub. I love ravens, I think they're beautiful birds. I believe the main difference between ravens and crows is the bluish gleam in the feathers of a raven. I could be wrong, but that's how I've always distinguished the 2.

In Cuba, the owl is also a symbol of death. But years ago, when I lived a few blocks away from Miami Metrozoo, I had an owl visit almost every night. We became friends and I always looked forward to her midnight visit.

My grandfather told me when his little daughter and granddaughter were sick a bird flew in the house. Lo sacó pero las niñas murieron poco después. I did find their death records in the 1930s. They both died the same day. That was on my Dad's side of the family. My Mom's side of the family panic when a bird flies in the house.

The Greater Roadrunner can be found throughout the desert Southwest and into northern California in semi-open, scrubby habitat from below sea level to nearly 10,000 feet in elevation. They thrive in areas dominated by creosote, mesquite, chaparral, and tamarisk, as well as grasslands, riparian woodlands and canyons. Great Roadrunners have expanded their range and now can be also be found in southwest Missouri, western Arkansas, eastern Oklahoma, and Louisiana. These birds avoid heavily forested and densely populated areas, but can tolerate sparser suburban development and open farmland. The Greater Roadrunner is considered a large terrestrial cuckoo. Roadrunners are long and slender-bodied reaching two feet from bill to white tail tip, with a bushy blue-black crest and mottled plumage that blends well with dusty shrubs. They are tan or brown with extensive blackish streaking on the upper parts and chest. Their crown is black with small with pale spots and their wings are dark with white highlights. As they run, they hold their lean frame nearly parallel to the ground and use their long tails as rudders. Their long tails are often held up above the body. The Greater Roadrunner gets its name from its remarkable running ability. When it is startled, it will run rather than fly. That's because the roadrunner is a poor flyer but can run at speeds of up to 15 miles per hour. They spend most of their lives on the ground hunting lizards, small mammals and birds. Greater Roadrunners eat poisonous prey, including venomous lizards and scorpions, with no ill effect. Roadrunners can kill rattlesnakes by pecking them repeatedly in the head. They slam large prey, like rodents and lizards, against a rock or the ground multiple times to break down the bones and elongate the victim, making it easier to swallow. Roadrunners have evolved a range of adaptations to deal with the extremes of desert living. Like seabirds, they secrete a solution of highly concentrated salt through a gland just in front of each eye, which uses less water than excreting it via their kidneys and urinary tract. Moisture-rich prey, including mammals and reptiles, supply them scarce water in their diet. Both chicks and adults flutter the unfeathered area beneath the chin to dissipate heat.
